Sams first percussion instrument (like many) was the drumset. His approach to teaching the drumset is to help the student find their own musical voice! His approach to this is simple, he works with recordings of songs that his students would like to learn to play by transcribing the drum part off of the recording, breaking it down into sections that become exercises for the drumset. In this way not only is the student learning to play the drumset but is also learning the mechanics of the drumset itself. In addition, Sam also teaches rudiments and uses exercise books to teach the student how to read music. This allows students to become well rounded drummers who are able to play by ear, by sheet music, and compose their own music!
